Saying your job in Italian with 'fare il', 'fare la'

When Italians tell you what they do for a living, they often don't use the verb essere (to be). They use fare (to do, to make) plus the definite article and the job: faccio il medico (I'm a doctor), fa la cameriera (she's a waitress), fa l'insegnante (he or she is a teacher). Word for word, that is "I do the doctor", which sounds very odd to an English speaker.

English speakers tend to trip up in two ways. They translate "I'm a doctor" directly as sono un medico, which is not how Italians normally say it. Or, once they meet fare, they drop the article and say faccio medico. This article shows the pattern, the article you need, and the simpler alternative with essere.

How it works

The construction has three parts: a form of fare, the definite article, and the profession noun. The article agrees with the noun as usual. It is il for most masculine nouns, la for feminine nouns, and l' before a vowel.

Faccio il medico in un ospedale.
(I'm a doctor in a hospital.)
Da giovane faceva la cameriera.
(When she was young she worked as a waitress.)

It is not the only way to state a job. You can also use essere with just the noun, with no article at all: sono medico, è avvocato. Both are correct and very common. Fare il ... sounds a little more conversational and puts the focus on the work you do. What you should avoid is the English-style sono un medico as a plain answer to the question che lavoro fai? (what do you do?).

Sono medico da dieci anni.
(I've been a doctor for ten years.)

The pattern works with practically every ordinary job noun, so the words below are a sample, not a complete list.

The words
Food and service

Cameriere and cameriera (waiter, waitress) take il and la. So does cuoco (cook). The same goes for parrucchiere (hairdresser).

Mio fratello fa il cuoco in un ristorante del centro.
(My brother is a cook in a restaurant in the city center.)
Health and school

Medico, dentista and veterinario are common examples. Nouns beginning with a vowel take l': fare l'infermiere, fare l'infermiera (nurse), fare l'insegnante (teacher, the same form for men and women). For school teachers you will also hear fare la maestra (primary school) and fare il professore (secondary school or university).

Mia madre fa l'insegnante di matematica.
(My mother is a math teacher.)
Mia sorella fa l'infermiera di notte.
(My sister works nights as a nurse.)
Offices and professions

Avvocato, architetto and ingegnere all start with a vowel, so they take l'. So do impiegato (office worker) and operaio (factory worker). Segretaria, ragioniere (accountant), giornalista and fotografo take la or il.

Luca fa l'avvocato a Milano.
(Luca is a lawyer in Milan.)
Faccio l'ingegnere in una ditta di Torino.
(I'm an engineer at a company in Turin.)
Mio padre fa l'impiegato in banca.
(My father works at a bank.)
Trades, uniforms and the road

Examples here include meccanico, idraulico (plumber), pompiere (firefighter), poliziotto, contadino (farmer), tassista and autista (driver).

Mio zio fa il meccanico da trent'anni.
(My uncle has been a mechanic for thirty years.)
Prima faceva il tassista, adesso fa l'autista di autobus.
(He used to be a taxi driver, now he drives a bus.)
Watch out
Keep the article after fare

Faccio medico is wrong. With fare the definite article is required. With essere there is no article: sono medico.

Use un only when you describe the person

When you add an adjective or other detail, the job noun becomes a description, and un or una is natural, just as in English.

È un medico molto bravo.
(He's a very good doctor.)
Nouns ending in -ista or -ante

Words like giornalista, dentista, tassista and insegnante have the same form for men and women. Only the article shows the gender: fa il dentista for a man, fa la dentista for a woman.

Fare can also mean acting like someone

Outside the topic of work, fare il or fare lo plus a noun or adjective can mean "to play the part of" or "to act like". Context makes the meaning clear.

Non fare lo stupido!
(Don't act stupid!)
Summary

To say what someone does for a living, use fare + definite article + job: faccio il cuoco, fa la cameriera, fa l'avvocato. You can also use essere with no article: sono medico. Keep un or una for descriptions such as un medico bravo, and never drop the article after fare.
