Professions in Italian: the '-tore' and '-trice' endings
When learning Italian, you quickly notice that many words for professions and people who perform actions end in -ore. If you want to talk about a woman doing these jobs, your first instinct as an English speaker might be to simply change the final vowel to an -a.
However, this is a very common trap. In Italian, masculine nouns ending in -tore have a special rule. Instead of just swapping the last letter, you must change the entire -tore ending to -trice to form the feminine version. Words like attore and lavoratore follow this distinct pattern.
The rule is straightforward once you know to look for it. When a masculine noun ends in -tore, you drop those four letters entirely and replace them with -trice.
For instance, if you want to talk about a male actor, you use attore. For a female actor, you switch the ending to get attrice. The same logic applies to words like scrittore and scrittrice.
Il mio attore preferito è in questo film.
(My favorite actor is in this movie.)
Lei è una bravissima attrice.
(She is a very good actress.)
Lui è uno scrittore famoso in tutto il mondo.
(He is a famous writer all over the world.)
Mia zia è una scrittrice di romanzi gialli.
(My aunt is a writer of detective novels.)
Notice how the root of the word remains exactly the same, but the tail end transforms completely to match the gender of the person you are talking about.
Common professions and roles
You will see this -tore and -trice relationship everywhere in everyday Italian. It covers the arts, business, sports, and daily life. A male worker is a lavoratore, while a female worker is a lavoratrice. In sports, a male player is a giocatore, and a female player is a giocatrice.
È una lavoratrice instancabile.
(She is a tireless worker.)
Quel giocatore corre molto veloce.
(That player runs very fast.)
La nostra squadra ha bisogno di una nuova giocatrice.
(Our team needs a new player.)
When dealing with management or administration, you will frequently hear direttore and direttrice. The pattern remains perfectly consistent across these vocabulary sets.
Il direttore ha organizzato una riunione importante.
(The manager organized an important meeting.)
Voglio parlare con la direttrice, per favore.
(I want to speak with the manager, please.)
Lavoro come traduttore per una casa editrice.
(I work as a translator for a publishing house.)
Watch out for exceptions
While the -tore to -trice rule applies to a large and reliable group of words, it is not an absolute law for every single noun ending in -ore. The most famous exception that trips up learners is the word for doctor. A male doctor is a dottore, but a female doctor is a dottoressa, not a dottotrice.
However, aside from a few isolated exceptions like this, you can confidently rely on the -trice ending for the vast majority of nouns and professions.
Summary
When an Italian noun describing a person's profession or action ends in the masculine -tore, do not just add an -a to make it feminine. Instead, replace -tore with -trice.
