German has a huge group of verbs known as separable-prefix verbs. They look like normal words in the dictionary, but they split in two when you actually use them in a sentence. English speakers often forget to separate them because English tends to keep phrases like wake up or turn on right next to each other.
In German, verbs like aufstehen, einkaufen, and anrufen send their prefixes flying to the very end of the sentence. Learning how to split them properly is a huge step toward sounding natural.

The Golden Rule for Main Clauses
When you use a separable verb as the main action in a present-tense sentence, it splits. The core verb stays in the normal second position, and the prefix moves to the absolute final spot before the full stop.
Let us look at daily routines and social events. You might get up (aufstehen), go shopping (einkaufen), or put on a jacket (anziehen).
Ich stehe jeden Tag um sieben Uhr auf.
(I get up at seven every day.)
Er kauft heute im Supermarkt ein.
(He is shopping at the supermarket today.)
Wir ziehen uns warm an.
(We are putting on warm clothes.)
Many other common verbs follow this exact pattern. You can invite someone (einladen), arrive somewhere (ankommen), bring something along (mitbringen), write a note (aufschreiben), or just stay home and watch TV (fernsehen).
Sie laden viele Gäste zur Party ein.
(They are inviting many guests to the party.)
Der Zug kommt um zehn Uhr an.
(The train arrives at ten o'clock.)
Phones and Devices
Separable verbs are everywhere in modern life. If you want to make a call, you use anrufen. When you finish, you hang up with auflegen. For electronics, you switch them on with einschalten and turn them off with ausschalten.
Ruf mich später an!
(Call me later!)
Ich schalte den Computer aus.
(I am turning off the computer.)
Watch Out: The Perfect Tense
When you talk about the past using the perfect tense, the prefix does not move to the end of the sentence by itself. Instead, it reunites with the verb, and the past tense marker -ge- is sandwiched in the middle. For instance, einkaufen becomes eingekauft.
Ich habe gestern viel eingekauft.
(I shopped a lot yesterday.)
However, if the base of the verb does not normally take a -ge-, you do not add one. A great example is vorbereiten. Because bereiten does not use -ge- in the past, the past participle of vorbereiten is simply vorbereitet.
Wir haben das Abendessen vorbereitet.
(We prepared the dinner.)
Summary
Remember the rule of thumb: in a basic sentence, the separable verb splits. The main part takes the normal verb position, and the little prefix shoots to the very end of the clause. In the past tense, they glue back together, usually with a -ge- sandwiched in the middle!
