When you learn Italian, you quickly get used to words ending in -o for men and -a for women. However, there is a large group of words that breaks this pattern. Nouns ending in -ista describe professions, hobbies, and beliefs, and they look exactly the same for both men and women in the singular.
If you see a word like turista or dentista, you cannot rely on the ending to tell you the gender of the person. Instead, you have to look at the words around the noun, especially the articles.

The singular form: Look at the article
In the singular, an -ista noun always ends in -a, regardless of who it describes. To show whether the person is a man or a woman, you must change the article before the noun.
For a man, you use masculine articles like il or un. For a woman, you use feminine articles like la or una. Any adjectives that describe the person will also match this gender.
Marco è un bravo dentista.
(Marco is a good dentist.)
Mia sorella è una giornalista famosa.
(My sister is a famous journalist.)
Parlo con il regista del film.
(I am speaking with the director of the movie.)
The plural forms: Splitting into -isti and -iste
While the singular form is shared, the plural forms split into two distinct endings. When talking about a group of men, or a mixed group of men and women, the ending changes to -isti. You use the masculine plural articles i or gli.
When talking exclusively about a group of women, the ending changes to -iste. You use the feminine plural article le.
I turisti sono arrivati in ritardo.
(The tourists have arrived late.)
Ci sono molte musiciste di talento in questa orchestra.
(There are many talented female musicians in this orchestra.)
Tutti gli artisti hanno bisogno di ispirazione.
(All artists need inspiration.)
