'Un collègue', 'une collègue': nouns where only the article shows the gender

In French, many nouns for people have a masculine and a feminine form, such as un acteur and une actrice. A large group has only one form for both men and women: un collègue is a male colleague, une collègue is a female one, and the noun itself does not change. The same goes for élève, artiste, touriste, journaliste, enfant and many more. Most of them end in -e.

English speakers often get these wrong in one of two ways. Some invent a feminine form that does not exist, such as collègueuse. Others keep the masculine article for a woman, as in un dentiste for a female dentist. In fact, the noun stays the same. Only the words around it change: the article, the possessive and the adjectives.

How it works

With these nouns, gender is marked by the words that go with the noun:

  • the article: un/une, le/la
  • the possessive: mon/ma, son/sa
  • adjectives and past participles: brillant/brillante, perdu/perdue

English does this too with words like teacher or friend, which say nothing about sex. French, however, forces you to choose masculine or feminine every time. So when you talk about a woman, the noun stays the same but everything that agrees with it becomes feminine.

Ma collègue est très sympa.
(My (female) colleague is very nice.)
C'est une élève brillante.
(She's a brilliant pupil.)

Rule of thumb: many person nouns ending in -e work this way, especially all nouns in -iste. The ending is only a strong hint, though. Enfant and baby-sitter do not end in -e and behave the same way.

Une touriste perdue m'a demandé le chemin.
(A lost (female) tourist asked me the way.)
La propriétaire veut augmenter le loyer.
(The landlady wants to raise the rent.)

(My (female) dentist is very gentle with children.)
Elle travaille comme journaliste à Lyon.
(She works as a journalist in Lyon.)

Watch out
Hidden gender

When the article or possessive is elided (l') or plural (les, mes, des), it no longer shows gender. L'artiste or mes collègues could refer to men or women. Look at the adjectives and past participles instead, and never guess the gender from the noun alone.

L'artiste est arrivée en retard.
(The (female) artist arrived late.)
Mes collègues sont très gentilles.
(My (female) colleagues are very kind.)
Not every -e noun works this way

Some have a real feminine form, such as un prince and une princesse, or un hôte and une hôtesse. Others have a fixed gender whoever they refer to, such as une personne or une victime. Those are covered in the article on fixed-gender nouns.

Same word, other meaning

Le secrétaire can also be a writing desk, and une célibataire is simply a single woman, even though the word is usually translated as bachelor.

Summary

For many person nouns, especially those ending in -e and all those in -iste, the noun is the same for men and women. Do not change the noun. Switch the article, the possessive and the adjectives instead: un bon élève becomes une bonne élève. With l' or a plural article or possessive, only the agreement shows who you mean.
