Kind 'to' someone in French: 'envers' and 'avec', not 'à'
In English you are kind to someone, rude to a waiter, fair to your staff. It is tempting to copy this with à, but French does not say gentil à quelqu'un to describe how you treat a person. When an adjective describes your attitude or behaviour toward someone, French uses envers (towards) or, in everyday speech, avec (with).
This works for a whole family of adjectives: gentil, poli, sévère, cruel, généreux, injuste and many more. Learn the pattern once and you can use it with all of them.

How it works
The structure is simple: adjective + envers + person. Instead of envers, you can usually say avec. The two are close in meaning, but they differ in tone:
avec is the everyday choice in conversation: il est gentil avec moi.
envers sounds a little more careful or formal and is very common in writing: il est respectueux envers ses collègues.
à l'égard de is a more formal alternative, typical of official or journalistic French.
Rule of thumb: if English says "to" or "towards" a person after an adjective of behaviour, think avec when speaking and envers when writing. Do not reach for à.
Elle est toujours aimable envers les clients.
(She is always kind to customers.)
Mon frère est très gentil avec les enfants.
(My brother is very kind to children.)
The words
Kind, friendly and polite
Gentil, aimable, amical, poli, généreux, patient, affectueux, tendre and bienveillant all describe warm or considerate behaviour. Their opposites work the same way: peu aimable, peu amical, impatient.
Nos voisins ont toujours été très amicaux envers nous.
(Our neighbours have always been very friendly to us.)
Il se montre sévère envers lui-même, mais bienveillant envers les autres.
(He is hard on himself, but kind towards others.)
Ma grand-mère est très généreuse avec ses petits-enfants.
(My grandmother is very generous to her grandchildren.)
Rude, harsh and unkind
Impoli, malpoli, grossier, méchant, cruel, sévère, agressif, arrogant, sarcastique, critique and hostile describe negative behaviour toward someone. Respectueux and irrespectueux fit here too.
Le serveur a été malpoli envers une cliente.
(The waiter was rude to a customer.)
Il ne faut pas être cruel envers les animaux.
(You mustn't be cruel to animals.)
Les élèves doivent rester respectueux envers leurs professeurs.
(Pupils must remain respectful towards their teachers.)
Fair, honest and loyal
Juste, injuste, équitable, partial, impartial, honnête, malhonnête, franc, sincère, loyal, reconnaissant and ingrat describe how fairly or faithfully you treat people. Adjectives like indulgent and malveillant follow the same pattern.
Tu es injuste envers ton frère.
(You're being unfair to your brother.)
Sois honnête avec moi, s'il te plaît.
(Please be honest with me.)
Je suis très reconnaissante envers mes parents.
(I am very grateful to my parents.)
Watch out
Notvers: vers means towards in space (il marche vers la porte). For attitudes, use envers.
Reconnaissant can also take à: je vous suis reconnaissant de votre aide. The person comes with à or envers, the reason with de.
Hostile often takes à, especially with ideas: hostile à un projet. With people, envers is also natural.
Respectueux can be followed by de: respectueux des autres.
To thank someone, say c'est gentil de ta part (that's kind of you). This is a fixed formula, not the conduct pattern.
Méchant describing a naughty child is used without a preposition: ne sois pas méchant !
Summary
When an adjective describes how you treat someone (kind, rude, fair, cruel, grateful), English says "to", but French says avec in everyday speech or envers in more careful or written French: gentil avec les enfants, poli envers tout le monde. Avoid à, except with reconnaissant and hostile, which also accept it.
