'Chanteuse' or 'actrice'? Feminine forms of '-eur' nouns

In French, a noun for a person who does something, such as a job, a role or an activity, usually changes its ending when that person is a woman. Most of these nouns end in -eur in the masculine, but their feminine forms split into two families: un serveur becomes une serveuse, while un acteur becomes une actrice. Other members include chanteur, directeur and vendeur.

English speakers find this hard because English has mostly dropped this kind of gender marking. We say singer or manager for everyone, and pairs like actor/actress feel old-fashioned. In French the feminine form is normal and expected, and picking the wrong ending (acteuse, chantrice) sounds instantly wrong. The good news is that a simple test tells you which ending to use.

How it works

There are two main patterns:

  • -eur → -euse: serveur → serveuse, chanteur → chanteuse
  • -teur → -trice: acteur → actrice, directeur → directrice

Here is the rule of thumb. Take the verb the noun comes from and form its -ant form (the present participle). If you can swap -ant for -eur and get the noun, the feminine is -euse. So chanter gives chantant, which matches chanteur, so the woman is a chanteuse. The same goes for vendant and vendeur, which gives vendeuse.

If there is no such match, the feminine is -trice. Diriger gives dirigeant, not directant, so the woman is a directrice. A second clue: -trice nouns often have a relative ending in -tion, such as direction, traduction, production.

Don't forget the article and any adjectives change too: un bon serveur, une bonne serveuse.

Ma tante est actrice.
(My aunt is an actress.)
La vendeuse était très aimable.
(The saleswoman was very kind.)
The words
The -euse group

These nouns match an -ant form of a verb: serveur (servant), chanteur, vendeur, danseur, coiffeur, boxeur, acheteur, pêcheur, buteur, jongleur, maquilleur, développeur, chercheur, coureur, sprinteur, voleur, voyageur, visiteur and travailleur. The feminine serveuse is just as common.

La serveuse nous apporte le menu.
(The waitress brings us the menu.)
Ma sœur est chanteuse dans un groupe de jazz.
(My sister is a singer in a jazz band.)
Ma coiffeuse est en vacances cette semaine.
(My hairdresser is on holiday this week.)
C'est une chercheuse très connue.
(She is a very well-known researcher.)
The -trice group

These nouns have no matching -ant form, and many have a partner in -tion: acteur, directeur, traducteur, inventeur, facteur, consommateur, conservateur, réalisateur, conducteur, explorateur, exportateur, importateur, fondateur, auditeur, narrateur, présentateur, producteur, éditeur, lecteur, sénateur, expéditeur, spectateur and utilisateur. A familiar feminine of this group is actrice.

La directrice de l'école est sympa.
(The head teacher is nice.)
Elle travaille comme traductrice à Bruxelles.
(She works as a translator in Brussels.)
La présentatrice du journal a changé.
(The newsreader has changed.)
C'est une grande lectrice de romans policiers.
(She is a big reader of crime novels.)
Watch out

A t before -eur does not automatically mean -trice. Chanteur, acheteur, buteur and sprinteur all match an -ant form (chantant, achetant), so they take -euse: une acheteuse, une sprinteuse.

A few words break the test. Sculpteur matches sculptant, yet the feminine is sculptrice. Ambassadeur has its own form in -drice: une ambassadrice.

L'ambassadrice arrive demain à Paris.
(The ambassador arrives in Paris tomorrow.)

The typical learner mistake is to keep the masculine form with a woman, as in ma mère est vendeur. It is understandable, but French speakers expect ma mère est vendeuse. Note also that other job nouns follow different patterns, such as boulanger → boulangère, which work separately from the -eur endings covered here.

Summary

For a woman, an -eur noun becomes -euse or -trice. If the noun matches the verb's -ant form (chantant, chanteur), use -euse: chanteuse, serveuse, vendeuse. If it doesn't, and especially if there is a related word in -tion, use -trice: actrice, directrice, traductrice. Learn sculptrice and ambassadrice as exceptions.
