Tisana vs. infuso vs. tè alle erbe

While English uses the umbrella term "herbal tea" for almost any hot drink made from plants, Italian makes specific distinctions based on the part of the plant used and the drink's purpose. The three main terms are tisana, infuso, and tè alle erbe.

Tisana

A2
A tisana is a drink primarily consumed for specific health benefits or medicinal purposes, such as aiding digestion, slimming, or inducing sleep. It typically involves a blend of different plant parts, including harder elements like roots, bark, and seeds, mixed with softer leaves to create a synergistic effect.
(Every evening I drink a fennel herbal tea to help with digestion.)
In farmacia ho comprato una tisana drenante e disintossicante.
(At the pharmacy, I bought a draining and detoxifying herbal tea.)
(If you cannot sleep, I will make you a valerian herbal tea.)

Infuso

B1
An infuso is typically made from the softer, delicate parts of plants, such as flowers, leaves, and fruits. While it can be healthy, it is drunk primarily for pleasure, aroma, and taste rather than a specific medical treatment, and it often features a single ingredient.
(I would like a wild berry infusion, please.)
L'infuso alla menta è molto rinfrescante in estate.
(Mint infusion is very refreshing in the summer.)
(For breakfast I often prepare a hibiscus infusion.)

Tè alle erbe

B1
The term tè alle erbe is a literal translation of the English "herbal tea" and is used colloquially as a generalized term. However, strictly speaking, the word implies the presence of leaves from the tea plant (Camellia sinensis). Therefore, this often refers to green or black tea flavored with herbs, though many use it loosely for any hot herbal drink.
Questo alle erbe contiene zenzero e limone.
(This herbal tea contains ginger and lemon.)
(I prefer herbal tea because it is lighter than coffee.)
(On the dessert menu, there is a list of herbal teas and tisanes.)

Summary

In summary, use tisana when the drink is a medicinal blend for health (like sleep or digestion), infuso for aromatic drinks made from flowers and fruit meant for pleasure, and tè alle erbe as a general term or for actual tea mixed with aromatic herbs.
