Ospedale vs. clinica
In Italian, both ospedale and clinica refer to places where medical care is provided, but they are not interchangeable. The difference mainly lies in their size, ownership, range of services, and specialization.
Ospedale
A1An ospedale is the general Italian word for hospital. It typically refers to a large, often public, institution that provides comprehensive medical and surgical treatment for a wide range of conditions. A key feature of an ospedale is that it almost always has an emergency room (pronto soccorso) and various specialized departments (reparti) for inpatient care.

(After the accident, an ambulance immediately took him to the hospital.)

(The new children's hospital was inaugurated last week.)

(I have to go visit my uncle who is admitted to the hospital.)

(The city hospital has an excellent cardiology department.)
Clinica
B1A clinica is a more specific term. It can refer to a clinica privata (private clinic/hospital), which offers services similar to a public ospedale but is privately owned, often smaller, and may specialize in certain procedures with shorter waiting times. More commonly, clinica refers to a smaller, specialized outpatient facility focusing on a specific branch of medicine where patients are treated but do not usually stay overnight (e.g., a dental or eye clinic). The term can also refer to a university-affiliated department (clinica universitaria) used for teaching and research.

(She preferred to give birth in a private clinic to have a single room.)

(I have an appointment at the dental clinic for a teeth cleaning.)

Summary
In essence, use ospedale for a general, public hospital that handles emergencies and a wide variety of medical issues. Use clinica when referring to a private hospital (clinica privata), a smaller outpatient center with a specific focus (like a dental or eye clinic), or a university teaching hospital.
