Caffè freddo vs. caffè shakerato vs. caffè ghiacciato
When ordering coffee in Italy during the summer, simply asking for iced coffee can be confusing. There are three distinct ways cold coffee is served, differing mainly in preparation method, texture, and whether ice cubes are actually present in the glass.
Caffè freddo
A1This refers to espresso that has been brewed in advance, sweetened (usually), and stored in a bottle or pitcher inside the refrigerator to chill. It is served cold but without ice cubes in the glass, making it a quick, grab-and-go option often found ready-made at bars.
(The bartender poured the cold coffee from a glass bottle.)
(I prefer cold coffee because it is not watered down by ice.)
(Did you put sugar in the cold coffee before putting it in the fridge?)
(For breakfast, I would just like a glass of cold coffee.)
Caffè shakerato
A2This is a fresh espresso shaken vigorously with ice cubes and liquid sugar in a cocktail shaker. The liquid is then strained into a martini or flute glass, resulting in a drink that is ice-cold and has a thick, frothy foam on top, but contains no actual ice cubes.
(I would like a shaken coffee with a little vanilla.)
(The foam on your shaken coffee is perfect.)
(Shaken coffee is the most elegant drink of the summer.)
(I cannot make a good shaken coffee at home without the right tool.)
Caffè ghiacciato
B1Often synonymous with caffè in ghiaccio (coffee on ice), this involves pouring fresh, hot espresso directly over ice cubes in a glass. It is famous in the Salento region where it is typically sweetened with almond syrup (latte di mandorla) rather than sugar.
(In Salento, they often drink iced coffee with almond milk.)
(Drink your iced coffee quickly before the ice melts.)
(In summer, nothing is better than an iced coffee in the afternoon.)
(Be careful of the thermal shock when you prepare the iced coffee.)
Summary
To summarize: caffè freddo is pre-brewed and kept in the fridge (no ice cubes); caffè shakerato is shaken with ice and strained for a frothy texture (no ice cubes in the glass); and caffè ghiacciato consists of hot espresso poured directly over ice cubes.
