Vage vs. unklar vs. undeutlich vs. schwammig vs. verschwommen

The German words vage, unklar, undeutlich, schwammig, and verschwommen can all be translated as vague or unclear in English, but they are not entirely interchangeable. Their correct usage depends on whether the lack of clarity relates to missing details, logical comprehension, physical sensory perception, evasive language, or visual focus.

Vage

The word vage means lacking detail, specific information, or certainty. It is usually used to describe thoughts, feelings, memories, plans, or statements that are broad, uncertain, and undefined.

Unklar

The word unklar describes something that is logically unclear, unresolved, ambiguous, or difficult to understand. It is used when facts, motives, or situations are not obvious or have not been decided yet.

Undeutlich

The word undeutlich means indistinct or physically hard to perceive through the senses, especially hearing or sight. It is commonly used for mumbled speech, bad handwriting, or shapes that are hard to make out.

(He spoke so indistinctly that I barely understood him on the phone.)

Schwammig

The word schwammig literally translates to spongy, but figuratively it means wishy-washy, evasive, or lacking solid substance. It is mostly used to criticize arguments, definitions, laws, or statements that are intentionally or carelessly imprecise.

(The definition in this textbook is much too spongy for me.)

Verschwommen

The word verschwommen primarily means visually blurry or out of focus. It is used when things literally cannot be seen sharply, or metaphorically when memories, thoughts, or boundaries fade into each other.

Summary

To summarize: Use vage for undefined ideas or feelings that lack detail. Choose unklar when a fact, motive, or situation is logically not understood or remains unresolved. Pick undeutlich when something is physically hard to hear or see due to poor sensory conditions. Opt for schwammig to criticize evasive, wishy-washy, or imprecise statements and rules. Finally, use verschwommen for things that are visually out of focus or blurred.
