Test vs. Prüfung vs. Examen
In German, the words Test, Prüfung, and Examen all relate to the concept of an examination, but they are not interchangeable. They differ significantly in terms of formality, scope, and the weight of their consequences, forming a scale from a small quiz to a life-altering final assessment.
Test
A2A Test is the most informal and smallest-scale assessment. It often refers to a short quiz in a school setting, a simple check of knowledge, or a procedure to determine a specific quality or condition, such as in medicine or technology.

Prüfung
B1A Prüfung is the most common and general term for a formal examination. It is more significant than a Test and covers a wider range of situations, from a university midterm or final exam to a driving test or a professional certification exam. If you are unsure which word to use for exam, Prüfung is often the safest choice.

An Examen often consists of multiple individual Prüfungen (both written and oral).
Nach dem bestandenen Examen darf sie als Ärztin arbeiten.
(After passing the state examination, she is allowed to work as a doctor.)
Mein Bruder lernt Tag und Nacht für sein juristisches Staatsexamen.
(My brother is studying day and night for his state examination in law.)
