Gemüsebeet vs. Gemüsegarten vs. Küchengarten vs. Nutzgarten

When cultivating food in Germany, terminology depends heavily on size, location, and purpose. While a Gemüsebeet is distinctively a single planting bed, Gemüsegarten, Küchengarten, and Nutzgarten describe the garden's function—ranging from strictly vegetables to general utility or culinary proximity.

Gemüsebeet

B1
This refers to a single planting bed or patch within a larger garden. It defines a specific, demarcated strip of soil prepared for growing vegetables, distinguished from a flower bed or a lawn. A garden usually contains multiple Gemüsebeete.
(I have to dig over the vegetable patch today before it rains.)
(The snails ate all the lettuce in the vegetable bed.)
(We laid out a new vegetable patch just for carrots and onions.)

Gemüsegarten

A2
This describes the entire area dedicated to growing vegetables. It is the most common term for a home garden focus on food production. It encompasses all the individual beds, paths, and perhaps a greenhouse.
Mein Großvater verbringt den ganzen Sommer in seinem Gemüsegarten.
(My grandfather spends the whole summer in his vegetable garden.)
(The vegetable garden is yielding a huge harvest this year.)
(A fence around the vegetable garden protects the food from deer.)

Küchengarten

B2
Translating literally to kitchen garden, this term emphasizes proximity to the house and immediate culinary use. Historically, it refers to gardens at castles or estates that supplied the kitchen, or modern gardens near the back door for herbs and daily greens.
(The chef gets fresh herbs directly from the kitchen garden.)
(In the past, every castle had a large kitchen garden for supplies.)
In unserem kleinen Küchengarten wachsen Schnittlauch und Petersilie.
(Chives and parsley grow in our small kitchen garden.)

Nutzgarten

B2
This means utility garden or productive garden. It is the broadest term and is used to contrast with a Ziergarten (ornamental/decorative garden). A Nutzgarten includes not just vegetables, but also fruit trees, berry bushes, and herbs—anything that is useful or edible.
(We want to transform our lawn into a productive utility garden.)
(A utility garden requires much more work than a pure flower garden.)
In ihrem Nutzgarten stehen Apfelbäume neben den Kartoffeln.
(Apple trees stand next to the potatoes in her utility garden.)

Summary

To summarize: A Gemüsebeet is just one single strip of soil. A Gemüsegarten is the whole area containing those beds. A Küchengarten focuses on herbs and ingredients close to the kitchen, while a Nutzgarten is the opposite of a decorative garden, containing all forms of edible plants including fruit trees.
