Fragen vs. nachfragen
While both fragen and nachfragen relate to the act of asking, they are not interchangeable. Fragen
A1Fragen is the general German verb for to ask or to question. It is used when you are asking for information for the first time, without any prior context or conversation on the topic.

Der Tourist fragt nach dem Weg zum Museum.
(The tourist is asking for the way to the museum.)

Nachfragen
B1Nachfragen means to ask again, to inquire, or to follow up. It is used when you need more information, want to confirm something you have already heard, or seek clarification because the initial answer was insufficient or unclear. The prefix nach- implies an action that comes after a previous one.
Ich habe die Antwort nicht ganz verstanden, ich muss da nochmal nachfragen.
(I didn't quite understand the answer, I have to ask about that again.)
Entschuldigung, ich möchte nur kurz nachfragen: Das Treffen ist um 15 Uhr, richtig?
(Excuse me, I just want to quickly check: The meeting is at 3 PM, correct?)
Der Chef hat bei mir nachgefragt, ob der Bericht schon fertig ist.
(The boss followed up with me to see if the report is finished yet.)
Wenn etwas unklar ist, sollten Sie sofort nachfragen.
