Einpacken vs. auspacken vs. verpacken vs. entpacken

The German words einpacken, auspacken, verpacken, and entpacken all revolve around the concept of packing. The key to understanding their distinct meanings lies in their prefixes: ein- (in), aus- (out), ver- (to enclose completely), and ent- (to undo/remove). These prefixes modify the base verb packen (to pack) to describe specific, and often opposite, actions.

Einpacken

A2
This word literally means to pack in. It is used for the everyday action of putting items into a container like a suitcase, a bag, or a box for travel, storage, or transport. It can also mean to wrap a gift or a sandwich.
Ich muss noch meinen Koffer für den Urlaub einpacken.
(I still have to pack my suitcase for the vacation.)
Kannst du mir bitte das Geschenk schön einpacken?
(Could you please wrap the gift nicely for me?)
Vergiss nicht, dir ein Mittagessen für die Arbeit einzupacken.
(Don't forget to pack yourself a lunch for work.)

Auspacken

A2
This is the direct opposite of einpacken and means to unpack or to take out. It describes the action of removing items from a container. It is commonly used for unpacking suitcases or unwrapping presents.
Sobald wir im Hotel ankommen, können wir die Koffer auspacken.
(As soon as we arrive at the hotel, we can unpack the suitcases.)
Die Kinder dürfen ihre Geschenke erst am Weihnachtsmorgen auspacken.
(The children are only allowed to unwrap their presents on Christmas morning.)
Er hat gerade seine Lebensmitteleinkäufe ausgepackt.
(He just unpacked his groceries.)

Verpacken

B1
This word means to package or to wrap up completely. It implies a more thorough, professional, or commercial process than einpacken. It is often used for packaging goods for shipping or sale, ensuring they are securely enclosed and protected.
Die Fabrik muss täglich Tausende von Produkten sicher verpacken.
(The factory has to securely package thousands of products every day.)

(The fragile glass must be carefully wrapped in bubble wrap.)

(The online shop packaged my order in a very environmentally friendly way.)

Entpacken

B1
As the opposite of verpacken, entpacken means to unpackage or to decompress. It is most frequently used in a technical context for extracting files from a compressed folder (like a .zip file). For physical items, it implies removing official or industrial packaging, like from a new electronic device.
Du musst die ZIP-Datei zuerst entpacken, um auf die Dokumente zugreifen zu können.
(You first have to unzip the file to be able to access the documents.)
Nachdem ich den neuen Fernseher entpackt hatte, habe ich die Verpackung entsorgt.
(After I unboxed the new television, I disposed of the packaging.)

(Can you help me install this software and decompress the files?)

Summary

The main difference lies in context and direction. einpacken and auspacken form an everyday pair: you einpacken (pack in) a suitcase for a trip and auspacken (unpack) it upon arrival. verpacken and entpacken form a more formal, commercial, or technical pair: a company will verpacken (package) a product, and you entpacken (unpackage/unbox) it. In computing, entpacken is the standard term for decompressing or unzipping files.
