Beschwerde vs. Klage vs. Reklamation

While Beschwerde, Klage, and Reklamation can all be translated as "complaint" in English, they serve very different functions in German. Beschwerde implies general dissatisfaction or formal grievances, Klage is usually a legal lawsuit, and Reklamation refers to consumer rights regarding defective products.

Beschwerde

B1
This is the most general term for a formal complaint about bad service, bad behavior, or an annoying situation. It suggests you are reporting an issue to an authority or supervisor. Uniquely, Beschwerden (plural) is also used medically to describe physical symptoms or ailments.
(I will write an official complaint about the rude waiter.)
(The patient went to the doctor with severe complaints (pain) in his back.)
(The neighbors filed a complaint with the police because of the noise.)
Das Management nimmt jede Beschwerde sehr ernst.
(The management takes every complaint very seriously.)

Klage

B2
In a modern context, Klage primarily refers to a lawsuit brought before a court of law. In a more literary or emotional context, it means a lamentation or wailing expression of sorrow.
(The company filed a lawsuit against its competitor.)
Seine Klage wurde vom Richter sofort abgewiesen.
(His lawsuit was immediately dismissed by the judge.)
(I have no desire to hear your constant lamenting about the weather.)
Er drohte mit einer Klage auf Schadenersatz.
(He threatened a lawsuit for damages.)

Reklamation

B1
This word is purely transactional. Reklamation is used when you return a defective product or report an unsatisfactory service specifically to get a refund, repair, or replacement. It implies a demand for a correction based on a consumer right.
(I have a complaint (claim) because this toaster does not work.)
(Unfortunately, a return/complaint is not possible without a receipt.)
(The complaint was processed quickly and I got my money back.)
(We have a high rate of product returns/complaints with this new model.)

Summary

To choose the right word, look at the goal: use Reklamation if you want a refund or exchange for a broken item. Use Klage if you are taking someone to court. Use Beschwerde for everything else, such as reporting rude staff, noise, or describing a health problem to a doctor.
