Akronym vs. Initialwort

In German linguistics, both Akronym and Initialwort refer to abbreviations created from the first letters of multiple words. The primary difference lies entirely in how they are pronounced aloud. An Akronym is pronounced as a single, fluid word (like NATO). In contrast, an Initialwort is pronounced letter by letter (like USA or Lkw).

Akronym

An Akronym is an abbreviation formed from the initial letters of other words that is pronounced together as a completely new, regular word.
Das Wort Laser ist ein bekanntes Akronym aus der Wissenschaft.
(The word laser is a well-known acronym from science.)
Er versuchte, ein eingängiges Akronym für sein neues Projekt zu finden.
(He tried to find a catchy acronym for his new project.)
Manchmal vergessen die Leute, wofür ein bestimmtes Akronym eigentlich steht.
(Sometimes people forget what a certain acronym actually stands for.)
In der Technologiebranche wird fast täglich ein neues Akronym erfunden.
(In the technology industry, a new acronym is invented almost every day.)
Weil man es flüssig lesen kann, bezeichnet man dieses Kurzwort als Akronym.
(Because it can be read fluently, this shortened word is referred to as an acronym.)

Initialwort

An Initialwort is an abbreviation formed from the starting letters of a phrase where each letter must be pronounced individually.
Die Bezeichnung GmbH ist ein typisches deutsches Initialwort.
(The designation GmbH is a typical German initialism.)
Viele Menschen verwechseln ein Initialwort oft mit einer einfachen Abkürzung.
(Many people often confuse an initialism with a simple abbreviation.)
Weil man jeden Buchstaben einzeln spricht, nennt man diese Form ein Initialwort.
(Because each letter is spoken individually, this form is called an initialism.)
Der Sprachwissenschaftler analysierte ein historisches Initialwort in seinem Vortrag.
(The linguist analyzed a historical initialism in his lecture.)
Wenn man Lkw laut vorliest, verwendet man genau genommen ein Initialwort.
(When reading Lkw aloud, one is technically using an initialism.)

Summary

To summarize, the distinction is entirely about pronunciation. If you can read the letters together as a brand-new word, it is an Akronym. If you must spell out every single letter aloud, it is an Initialwort.
