Queja vs. reclamación
While both words are often translated as "complaint" in English, they serve different purposes in Spanish. A queja is generally an expression of dissatisfaction, pain, or annoyance, often focusing on the feeling or the negative experience. On the other hand, a reclamación is a formal claim or demand where a user asserts their rights and requests a specific solution, compensation, or correction.
Queja
B1This word refers to the act of expressing displeasure, regret, or pain. It can be informal (venting to a friend) or formal (reporting bad behavior), but it primarily focuses on the dissatisfaction rather than a legal demand for compensation.

(The neighbors filed a complaint about the constant noise from the party.)

(The old man let out a moan of pain when he stood up from the chair.)
Deja de darme tu queja y empieza a buscar una solución.
(Stop giving me your complaint and start looking for a solution.)
Reclamación
B2This implies a formal claim or demand. It is used when a specific right has been violated, such as a breach of contract or a defective product, and the person expects a refund, exchange, or official administrative action.
Tuve que poner una reclamación en el aeropuerto porque perdieron mi maleta.
(I had to file a claim at the airport because they lost my suitcase.)
Si el producto está defectuoso, tienes derecho a presentar una reclamación.
(If the product is defective, you have the right to file a formal complaint.)

Summary
To choose the correct word, consider your goal. If you just want to say you are unhappy or annoyed, use queja. If you want to officially demand money back, a replacement, or assert a legal right, use reclamación.
