Oír vs. escuchar
While both Spanish words oír and escuchar relate to the sense of hearing, they are not interchangeable. The key difference lies in the intention behind the action, much like the distinction between to hear and to listen in English.
Oír
A1This verb refers to the physical act of perceiving sound with your ears. It is an involuntary action; you don't need to be paying attention for it to happen. It is the direct equivalent of the English verb to hear.
De repente, oí un ruido extraño en la calle.
(Suddenly, I heard a strange noise in the street.)
Mi abuelo no oye muy bien, necesita un audífono.
(My grandfather doesn't hear very well, he needs a hearing aid.)

(Even though I was in another room, I heard the telephone ring.)
No te oigo, ¿puedes hablar más alto por favor?
(I can't hear you, can you please speak louder?)
Desde mi balcón, oigo a la gente en el mercado.
(From my balcony, I hear the people in the market.)
Escuchar
A1This verb means to intentionally pay attention to a sound or to what someone is saying. It is a conscious, active process that requires focus. It is the direct equivalent of the English verb to listen.
Me encanta escuchar música clásica para relajarme.
(I love to listen to classical music to relax.)
Por favor, escucha atentamente mis instrucciones.
(Please, listen carefully to my instructions.)

Summary
In essence, the difference is simple: oír is the passive, involuntary ability to perceive sound (to hear), while escuchar is the active, conscious choice to pay attention to that sound (to listen). You might oír a conversation in the next room, but you decide to escuchar it to understand what is being said.
