Grueso vs. espeso vs. denso
The Spanish words grueso, denso, and espeso can all be translated as thick in English, but they are not interchangeable. Each word describes a different type of thickness, referring to physical dimensions, fluid consistency, or the compactness of elements.
Grueso
A2Grueso refers to the physical thickness, diameter, or girth of a solid object. It is used to describe something that is wide, has a large circumference, or is simply not thin. It is a dimensional quality.

Espeso
B1Espeso describes the high consistency or low fluidity of liquids and semi-liquids. It is used for substances that are not watery, flow slowly, and have a high concentration of solid particles. It can also describe things that are dense in a visual sense, like fog or a forest.

Denso
B2Denso refers to density, meaning a high mass per unit of volume or things being very tightly packed together. It is often used in a more technical or scientific context, but also for describing crowds, traffic, or even abstract concepts like a difficult text.
El tráfico era tan denso que tardamos una hora en avanzar un kilómetro.
(The traffic was so dense that it took us an hour to move one kilometer.)

Summary
In short, use grueso for the physical dimension of solid objects like a wall or a sweater. Use espeso for the consistency of liquids, semi-liquids, and visual masses like soup or fog. Use denso for how tightly packed something is, such as a crowd, traffic, or a substance in a scientific sense.
