Entender vs. comprender

Spanish language contains multiple words with near-identical meanings. A similar case is the expression of understanding, captured by entender and comprender. Albeit they are frequently used as synonyms, subtle differences exist between these words.

Entender

A1
Entender is used to convey a basic level of understanding. It's more about grasping or catching the meaning of something on a surface level without deep comprehension.
No entiendo las instrucciones.
(I don't understand the instructions.)
¿Entiendes lo que te estoy diciendo?
(Do you understand what I'm saying to you?)

Comprender

B1
Comprender, on the other hand, refers to a deeper understanding, implying a full grasp or internalization of knowledge. It can also mean to include or encompass.
Comprendo la gravedad de la situación.
(I comprehend the gravity of the situation.)
La colección comprende una variedad de obras de arte.
(The collection includes a variety of artwork.)

Summary

While both entender and comprender can express understanding in Spanish, entender is typically used when referring to simple, direct understanding, whereas comprender implies a more profound, comprehensive grasp of the concept. Context also plays an important role in choosing which word to use.
