Verbs of giving and telling need 'a' or 'para' before the person

In English you can say give my sister a book or show my parents the photos, with two objects without a preposition next to each other. Portuguese does not allow this. With verbs like dar, dizer, mostrar, explicar and mandar, the thing that is given, said or sent is the direct object. The person who receives it, listens or reads it is an indirect object, so it needs the preposition a or para in front of it.

English speakers trip over this because English hides the recipient in word order. Phrases like dar a minha irmã um livro or mostrar os meus pais as fotos feel natural to an English ear but sound broken to a Portuguese one.

How it works

The basic pattern is verb + thing + a/para + person. The preposition a merges with the article that follows it: a + o = ao and a + a = à. So you say ao professor and à irmã.

Ela deu um livro à irmã.
(She gave her sister a book.)
Eu disse a ele que não podia ir.
(I told him that I couldn't go.)

When the recipient is a pronoun, you can drop the preposition and use an indirect object pronoun: me, te, lhe, nos, lhes. In Portugal you will often hear disse-lhe. In Brazil para ele or pra ele is more common in speech, while me works everywhere.

Você pode me explicar isso?
(Can you explain that to me?)

Rule of thumb: if English lets you say verb + person + thing, Portuguese wants a or para before the person, or a pronoun like lhe.

The words
Telling and asking

These verbs name the listener or reader with a or para: dizer, falar (in the sense of tell), contar, explicar, perguntar, pedir, solicitar, implorar, suplicar, escrever, ensinar, mostrar, anunciar, revelar, confessar, declarar, prometer, desejar and ordenar.

Vou perguntar ao professor.
(I will ask the teacher.)
Escrevi uma carta à minha avó.
(I wrote my grandmother a letter.)
Mostrei as fotos para os meus pais.
(I showed my parents the photos.)
Advice and suggestions

Aconselhar, sugerir, propor, recomendar, prescrever and receitar follow the same pattern.

O médico recomendou repouso ao paciente.
(The doctor recommended rest to the patient.)
Giving and moving things

Dar, dar de comer, oferecer, emprestar, devolver, pagar, vender, servir, fornecer, doar, deixar and legar (in wills), passar (a ball), apresentar (a person to another) and transferir (money). The same goes for entregar.

Emprestei o carro ao meu irmão.
(I lent my brother the car.)
Quero apresentar a Ana aos meus amigos.
(I want to introduce Ana to my friends.)
Sending and carrying

Mandar, enviar, encaminhar, reencaminhar, levar and trazer. With levar and trazer, para is by far the most natural choice.

Mandei uma mensagem ao João.
(I sent João a message.)
Trouxe um presente para você.
(I brought you a present.)
Watch out
A and para are not always interchangeable

A is safe and slightly more formal everywhere. Para is very common in Brazil, but after levar, trazer and mandar it can also mark a destination: levar para casa means take home. With falar, the listener takes com when you mean talk to someone (falar com a Ana) and para only when you mean tell someone something.

Some verbs take the person as a direct object

Informar and avisar usually work the other way round: the person is the direct object and the information comes after de. Aconselhar can also do this when the advice is an action: aconselhar alguém a fazer algo.

Avisei o chefe do atraso.
(I warned my boss about the delay.)

The typical mistake is copying English word order: dei o meu irmão o livro. Put the thing first and the person after a or para: dei o livro ao meu irmão, or simply dei-lhe o livro.

Summary

Portuguese never puts two objects without a preposition side by side. With verbs of giving, telling, sending and advising, the thing comes straight after the verb and the person gets a (ao, à) or para, or becomes a pronoun such as me or lhe. Just remember that informar and avisar take the person directly.
