One form for men and women: nouns like 'colega' and 'cliente'

Many Portuguese nouns for people have a masculine form and a feminine form: o amigo and a amiga, o professor and a professora. A large group, however, has only one form for both sexes. With colega, cliente, estudante or hóspede, the noun itself never changes. You can only tell whether the person is a man or a woman from the article, the possessive and the adjectives around it: o colega is a male colleague, and a colega is a female one.

English speakers find this tricky for two reasons. English nouns like colleague, customer and guest carry no gender at all, so there is no habit to copy. And once learners have absorbed the -o/-a pattern, they tend to apply it everywhere and invent forms like a clienta or a estudanta. They may also forget that the adjectives still have to agree with the person.

How it works

The noun stays the same, and everything around it changes. Articles (o/a, um/uma), possessives (o meu/a minha), demonstratives (este/esta) and adjectives all follow the real sex of the person.

A minha colega nova é muito simpática; o colega dele também.
(My new colleague is very nice; his colleague too.)
Esta cliente pediu um café e o cliente da mesa ao lado pediu um chá.
(This customer [a woman] ordered a coffee, and the customer [a man] at the next table ordered a tea.)

In the plural, the usual rule applies. A mixed group, or a group whose sex you don't know, takes the masculine: os estudantes. A group of women only takes the feminine: as estudantes.

Os meus parentes chegam no sábado.
(My relatives are arriving on Saturday.)

Rule of thumb: nouns for people ending in -nte, in some other -e, or in an -a that is not a feminine ending usually belong to this group. Words like gerente, paciente and jovem work exactly the same way, and so do most words in -ista, such as turista and dentista.

The words
Words ending in -nte

This is the biggest group: estudante, adolescente, cliente, parente, doente, presidente, assistente, visitante, participante, iniciante, principiante, viajante, ouvinte, imigrante, residente, habitante, descendente, comerciante, concorrente, oponente, atacante, sobrevivente, manifestante, militante, governante, pedinte, remetente, tripulante, contribuinte and anunciante.

A estudante brasileira chega amanhã.
(The Brazilian student [a woman] arrives tomorrow.)
A presidente da empresa está numa reunião.
(The president of the company [a woman] is in a meeting.)
Other words ending in -e

Chefe, hóspede, intérprete, detetive, cúmplice, rebelde, herege and extraterrestre follow the same pattern.

Temos uma hóspede francesa no quarto 12.
(We have a French guest [a woman] in room 12.)
A intérprete traduziu tudo para inglês.
(The interpreter [a woman] translated everything into English.)
Words ending in -a

The final -a of these words is not a feminine ending, so they also work for men: colega, colega de turma, atleta, acrobata, compatriota, diplomata, astronauta, cineasta, psiquiatra, poliglota, pirata, aristocrata, homicida, psicopata, hipócrita, idiota and alienígena.

Ela é uma atleta muito rápida.
(She is a very fast athlete.)
Other endings and compounds

Repórter, refém, virgem and canibal also have one form for both sexes. So do compounds such as porta-voz, guarda-costas, guarda-redes and salva-vidas, even though their last part has its own gender.

A guarda-redes defendeu o penálti.
(The goalkeeper [a woman] saved the penalty.)
A porta-voz do governo falou com os jornalistas.
(The government spokesperson [a woman] spoke to the journalists.)
Watch out
Words with two meanings

Caixa, segurança and polícia are feminine words for a thing: a caixa means the box or the till, a segurança means security, and a polícia means the police. When they refer to a person, they take o or a depending on who that person is.

O segurança abriu a porta.
(The security guard [a man] opened the door.)
O caixa disse-me o preço.
(The cashier [a man] told me the price.)
Feminine forms you may hear

A few of these words have informal or less common feminine forms, such as clienta, parenta, hóspeda, chefa and presidenta. They are not mistakes, but they are marked. The safe choice is always the invariable form with a: a chefe, a cliente. Never invent forms like estudanta or colego.

A chefe está de férias esta semana.
(The boss [a woman] is on holiday this week.)
Not every -e word belongs here

Some words ending in -e do have a separate feminine, for example o mestre / a mestra. Others have one fixed gender whoever they refer to. O cônjuge is always masculine, even for a wife, and a pessoa and a criança are always feminine, even for a man or a boy.

Summary

With nouns like colega, cliente, estudante and hóspede, never change the noun. Change the words around it: use o, um, o meu and masculine adjectives for a man, and a, uma, a minha and feminine adjectives for a woman.
