How Portuguese says 'summer evening' and 'music festival'

English builds compounds by stacking nouns: summer evening, music festival, world champion. The first noun describes the second. Portuguese usually works the other way round. The main noun comes first, and the describing idea follows it, either as de + noun (noite de verão) or as an adjective (festival musical, proteção solar).

English speakers often copy the English order and produce things like música festival or verão noite, which sound wrong to a native speaker. The fix is simple once you see the pattern: main noun first, describing word second.

How it works

Take the English compound, find the main noun (the thing itself) and put it first. Then add the describing word in one of two ways:

de + noun

festival de música, tempestade de inverno, creme de noite. This is the everyday, all-purpose option.

An adjective

indústria musical, céu noturno, proteção solar. These adjectives mean relating to X, and they often sound a little more formal or technical.

Many ideas can be said both ways, and some combinations simply prefer one. Portuguese does have a few real noun-noun compounds, such as palavra-chave, so the pattern is a strong habit rather than a strict ban. When in doubt, though, de + noun is the safest choice.

Numa noite de verão fomos a um festival de música.

The words
Music, art and the world

Use de música or musical, de arte or artístico, and do mundo or mundial. Note that do mundo is de + o, because mundo takes the article here.

A indústria musical mudou muito com a internet.
(The music industry has changed a lot with the internet.)
A escola tem um projeto de arte para crianças.

O estilo artístico dela é muito original.
(Her art style is very original.)

The seasons

In everyday speech use de verão, de inverno, de primavera and de outono. The adjectives invernal, primaveril, outonal and especially estival are more descriptive or formal, and you will meet them in weather reports and writing.

A tempestade de inverno fechou várias estradas.
(The winter storm closed several roads.)
Este ano o clima invernal chegou cedo.
(This year the winter weather arrived early.)
Adoro as tardes de primavera no parque.
(I love spring afternoons in the park.)
A paisagem outonal da serra é linda.
(The autumn landscape in the mountains is beautiful.)
A seca estival preocupa os agricultores.
(The summer drought worries the farmers.)

Likewise, clima primaveril means spring weather and ar de outono means autumn air.

Night and sun

Use de noite for products and times (creme de noite) and noturno for descriptions (céu noturno, modo noturno). For the sun, the adjective solar is the normal choice.

Na praia uso sempre proteção solar.
(At the beach I always use sun protection.)
Longe da cidade, o céu noturno está cheio de estrelas.
(Far from the city, the night sky is full of stars.)
Fixed expressions

Some compounds are set phrases with an adjective, such as linguagem corporal (body language) and reconhecimento facial (facial recognition). Learn these as whole units.

O telemóvel desbloqueia com reconhecimento facial, e a linguagem corporal dele mostrava nervosismo.
(The phone unlocks with facial recognition, and his body language showed nervousness.)
Watch out
Agreement

The adjectives agree with the noun. Noturno becomes noturna and artístico becomes artística. Words ending in -al or -ar (mundial, solar, outonal) only change for plural: painéis solares.

de noite vs. à noite

After a noun, de noite is a describing phrase (creme de noite). On its own it can also mean at night, like à noite.

Not always interchangeable

campeão do mundo and campeão mundial are both fine, but creme noturno is less usual than creme de noite. Copy the combinations you hear.

Classic mistake

Never keep the English order. Música festival and verão noite are wrong.

Summary

When English stacks two nouns, Portuguese puts the main noun first and the describing word after it: use de + noun for everyday speech (noite de verão, festival de música), or an adjective that agrees with the noun (indústria musical, proteção solar). When unsure, de + noun is the safe choice.
