You learn early that French possessives agree with the noun: mon père but ma mère, ton frère but ta sœur. Then you meet mon amie, ton école and son histoire, and the rule seems to break. All three nouns are feminine, yet they take the masculine-looking mon, ton and son.
The reason is sound. French dislikes two vowels colliding, and ma amie or ta école would create exactly that clash. English has nothing similar, because my, your and his never change. So careful learners who follow the gender rule faithfully often produce ma adresse or sa idée. Those forms are always wrong.

How it works
When a feminine singular noun starts with a vowel or a mute h, replace ma, ta and sa with mon, ton and son. The noun stays feminine. Only the possessive changes its shape, and any adjective still takes its feminine form: mon amie française.
In speech, the n links to the vowel, so mon amie sounds like mo-namie. It sounds exactly like mon ami (a male friend), and the context tells you which is meant.
C'est mon amie.
(She is my friend.)
Quelle est ton adresse ?
(What is your address?)
Il adore son école.
(He loves his school.)
The plural forms mes, tes and ses never cause trouble, because they already link smoothly: mes amies, tes idées. The same goes for notre, votre and leur.
The words
The possessives mon, ton and son do the work. Any feminine noun with a vowel or mute h at the start triggers them. Here are common ones, grouped by theme.
Look only at the word directly after the possessive. If an adjective comes first, that adjective controls the choice. Ancienne starts with a vowel, so it takes mon. Nouvelle starts with a consonant, so the possessive goes back to ma. In the same way, mon amie becomes ma meilleure amie.
Mon ancienne école est près d'ici, mais ma nouvelle école est loin.
(My old school is near here, but my new school is far away.)
Not every h is mute
With a mute h, as in histoire, habitude, heure and hôtesse, the word behaves as if it starts with a vowel. A few words have an aspirated h, which blocks the linking. They keep ma, ta and sa: sa honte, sa hauteur, ma haine. A dictionary marks these, often with an asterisk.
Il cache sa honte.
(He hides his shame.)
The gender does not change
Mon amie is still a woman, and son idée is still feminine. Any adjective that follows must agree in the feminine: mon idée est bonne, never bon.
Summary
Before a feminine singular word that starts with a vowel or a mute h, use mon, ton and son instead of ma, ta and sa: mon amie, ton école, son histoire. Check the word immediately after the possessive. If it starts with a consonant or an aspirated h, go back to ma, ta and sa: ma nouvelle école, sa honte. The noun stays feminine throughout.
