Why 'examen' gains an accent and 'canción' loses one in the plural

Some Spanish words seem to change their spelling for no reason when they become plural. One examen becomes two exámenes, with a brand-new accent. One canción becomes several canciones, and the accent disappears. The same thing happens with joven and jóvenes, imagen and imágenes, corazón and corazones, and autobús and autobuses.

English speakers find this confusing because English has no written accents to manage, and English plurals never change how a word is spelled inside. In Spanish, though, the pronunciation stays exactly the same. Only the written accent changes, because the word now has one more syllable and Spanish spelling rules have to keep track of where the stress falls.

How it works

Spanish has a simple default for stress. A word that ends in a vowel, -n or -s is stressed on the second-to-last syllable, so it needs no accent. A word that ends in any other consonant is stressed on the last syllable. A written accent appears only when a word breaks these defaults. Any word stressed three syllables from the end always carries one.

Adding -es adds a syllable, so the stressed vowel ends up in a different position counting from the end. The stress itself does not move.

Accent appears

e-XA-men ends in -n and is stressed second-to-last, so it follows the default. In e-XÁ-me-nes the same vowel is now third from the end, so it needs an accent.

Accent vanishes

can-CIÓN ends in -n but is stressed on the last syllable, which breaks the default, so it needs an accent. In can-CIO-nes the stress now falls second-to-last on a word ending in -s. That is the default, so no accent is needed.

Rule of thumb: say the plural aloud, keep the stress where it was, and then check whether the new shape follows the default.

Tengo dos exámenes mañana.
(I have two exams tomorrow.)
Los jóvenes cantaron varias canciones.
(The young people sang several songs.)
The words
Words that gain an accent

These are words ending in unstressed -en, stressed on the syllable before it. This group is small, so learn its members well: examen (also in examen de ingreso), imagen, joven, crimen (also in crimen de guerra), volumen, orden, desorden, preorden, origen, margen (also in margen de beneficio), virgen, certamen (also in certamen de belleza) and resumen, both as a summary and as a bank statement. The rare espécimen behaves differently: it already has an accent, which moves in especímenes.

Mira estas imágenes de la playa.
(Look at these pictures of the beach.)
La biblioteca tiene tres volúmenes de esta historia.
(The library has three volumes of this story.)
El jefe da órdenes todo el día.
(The boss gives orders all day.)
Escribe tus notas en los márgenes.
(Write your notes in the margins.)
Hay tres exámenes de ingreso este año.
(There are three entrance exams this year.)
La película habla de crímenes de guerra.
(The film is about war crimes.)
Words in -ón that lose their accent

This group is huge: avión, corazón, balcón, cajón, cinturón, montón, botón, ratón, león, camión, millón, pantalón, acordeón, sillón, balón, barón, cañón, cartón, camaleón, campeón, mentón, carbón, rincón, cupón, dragón, edredón, halcón, galón, portón, buzón, jamón, talón, tacón, avispón, riñón, limón, pulmón, colchón, melón, monzón, champiñón, camisón, pezón, melocotón, peatón, faraón, lechón, salmón, saxofón, tiburón, cordón, escalón, polizón, ladrón, torreón, jarrón, tifón and marrón.

Tengo dos balcones en mi casa.
(I have two balconies in my house.)
Dibujó corazones en la carta.
(She drew hearts on the letter.)
Words in -ión and -ción

Every one of these works the same way: canción, lección, dirección, invitación, explicación, traducción, oración, población, reunión, religión, decisión, opinión, ocasión, elección, relación, situación, organización, atención, anfitrión, escorpión, gorrión, pensión, adaptación, adicción, adición, adopción, aparición, audición, emisión, explosión, suscripción, aceleración, acusación and agresión.

Hoy tenemos dos reuniones y tres lecciones.
(Today we have two meetings and three lessons.)
Other endings: -án, -én, -ín, -ún, -és, -ús

Words with these endings follow the same pattern: jardín, calcetín, violín, delfín, bailarín, cojín and calabacín; huracán, volcán, desván, imán and faisán; andén, almacén and rehén; atún; autobús; interés, revés, cortés and descortés. Many nationality words belong here too: inglés, francés, japonés, portugués, holandés, irlandés, danés, escocés, finlandés, galés, alemán, catalán and musulmán.

Los turistas alemanes e ingleses esperan en los andenes.
(The German and English tourists are waiting on the platforms.)
Compré tres pares de calcetines.
(I bought three pairs of socks.)
Watch out

The typical mistakes are keeping the old accent (corazónes, cajónes) or forgetting to add the new one (examenes, imagenes). Both are wrong.

Two words really do shift their stress, so the accent moves to a different vowel. Carácter (ca-RÁC-ter) becomes caracteres (ca-rac-TE-res), and régimen (RÉ-gi-men) becomes regímenes (re-GÍ-me-nes). Learn these two by heart.

Estos caracteres chinos son difíciles.
(These Chinese characters are difficult.)
Probé varios regímenes, pero ninguno funcionó.
(I tried several diets, but none of them worked.)

Words of one syllable never get an accent in either form: tren becomes trenes, and mes becomes meses. A word that ends in a stressed vowel just adds -s and keeps its accent: café becomes cafés.

Summary

The stress stays on the same vowel, and only the written accent changes. Words ending in unstressed -en, like examen and joven, gain an accent in the plural (exámenes, jóvenes). Words with an accent on a final -n or -s, like canción, corazón and inglés, lose it (canciones, corazones, ingleses). The two real exceptions, where the stress moves, are caracteres and regímenes.
