Folheto vs. panfleto vs. brochura

While folheto, panfleto, and brochura are often used interchangeably to translate brochure, flyer, or leaflet, they effectively describe different physical formats and levels of complexity. The key differences lie in whether the paper is folded, bound, or loose, as well as the context in which they are distributed.

Folheto

A2
A folheto generally refers to a single sheet of paper that has been folded one or more times (like a tri-fold) to organize information. It is standard for informational handouts, tourism guides, or supermarket deals.

(The doctor handed me an explanatory leaflet about the medicine's side effects.)
(They left a supermarket leaflet in my mailbox with the week's promotions.)
(This tourist brochure has an excellent map of the historic center.)

Panfleto

B1
A panfleto is typically a single, unfolded sheet of paper usually printed on lower quality paper for mass distribution. While often used for cheap advertising (flyers), historically it carries a strong connotation of political or aggressive ideological messaging.
(The protesters distributed a pamphlet demanding better working conditions.)
(Someone gave me a flyer on the street announcing the opening of a new gym.)
(The electoral campaign filled the streets with flyers featuring the candidate's face.)

Brochura

B2
A brochura is the most substantial of the three, referring to a booklet consisting of multiple pages that are bound, stitched, or stapled together. It implies higher production value and is used for corporate catalogs, premium product showcases, or detailed manuals.
(The real estate agency prepared a luxurious brochure with photos of the apartments.)

(You can consult the university booklet to see the complete list of courses.)

(The company distributed an institutional brochure to the new investors.)

Summary

To choose the right word, consider the format and purpose: use panfleto for a simple loose flyer or political text; use folheto for a folded sheet used for information or promos; and use brochura for a multi-page bound booklet or catalog.
