Educado vs. instruído vs. culto vs. erudito vs. douto
While English often groups concepts of learning and manners under educated, Portuguese distinguishes clearly between having good manners (educado), having formal schooling (instruído), possessing refined culture (culto), having deep academic knowledge (erudito), and commanding authoritative wisdom (douto).
Educado
A2This is the most common false friend for English speakers. While it can mean schooled, it primarily refers to someone who is polite, well-mannered, and has a good upbringing regarding social etiquette.
(The boy was very polite and gave up his seat to the elderly woman.)
(It would be polite of you to say thank you for the gift.)
Eles são vizinhos silenciosos e muito educados.
(They are quiet and very well-mannered neighbors.)
Instruído
B2This refers to someone who has received formal instruction, schooling, or technical training. It implies the person is informed and knowledgeable, but not necessarily sophisticated or highly cultured.
(He is an educated man who knows the country's laws well.)
(We need a trained technician to operate this machine.)
A leitura torna o cidadão mais instruído e consciente.
(Reading makes a citizen more informed and aware.)
Culto
B2This describes a person who is cultured. It goes beyond school grades to imply a broad general knowledge, intellectual sophistication, and an appreciation for arts, literature, and history.
(She is a very cultured woman who loves opera and classical literature.)
(The conversation with him was fascinating, as he is extremely cultured.)
(To seem more cultured, he started learning French.)
Erudito
C1This indicates a high level of scholarly knowledge. An erudito person is an expert who has studied a subject deeply and academically. It is a step above culto in terms of academic rigor.
(The professor wrote a scholarly analysis on medieval poetry.)
(He isn't just smart, he is a scholar in quantum physics.)
(His vocabulary is so scholarly that it is sometimes hard to understand.)
Douto
C2This is a formal, often archaic or literary term for someone very learned or wise. It is rarely used in casual conversation and is mostly found in legal contexts or stiff, formal writing.
(The learned judges arrived at a complex conclusion.)
(He consulted the books of the wise and learned men of the past.)
A plateia ouviu atentamente o douto discurso do reitor.
(The audience listened attentively to the dean's learned speech.)
Summary
To summarize: use educado for good manners/politeness; instruído for formal schooling/information; culto for sophistication/refined tastes; erudito for deep academic expertise; and douto only in very formal or legal contexts to mean wise/learned.
