Unique vs. singulier

While both unique and singulier can be translated as unique or singular in English, they are not interchangeable. Unique emphasizes that something is one of a kind, focusing on quantity and exclusivity, whereas singulier highlights a quality of being peculiar, remarkable, or different from the norm.

Unique

A2
Unique means that there is only one of its kind, emphasizing that something is exclusive, unparalleled, or has no equivalent. It's about being the one and only.
Chaque flocon de neige est unique.
(Every snowflake is unique.)
(It's a unique opportunity to travel around the world.)
(This painting is a one-of-a-kind piece, no copy exists.)
(He is my only son, I have no other children.)
(His talent for music is truly unique.)

Singulier

B2
Singulier describes a quality that is peculiar, strange, remarkable, or distinctive. It highlights that something or someone stands out from the ordinary due to unusual characteristics, not because it's the only one in existence.
C'est un homme au destin singulier.
(He is a man with a remarkable destiny.)
Elle a un style vestimentaire très singulier.
(She has a very distinctive fashion style.)
(I had a strange feeling upon entering this old house.)

(In grammar, the word house is in the singular.)

Summary

In essence, use unique when you mean one and only (rarity, exclusivity). Use singulier when you mean peculiar, remarkable, or unusual (distinctiveness from the norm). An object can be unique (the only one) without being singulier (strange or remarkable), and something can be singulier (peculiar) even if many similar items exist.
