Soir vs. soirée

While both the French words soir and soirée translate to "evening" in English, they are not interchangeable. The key difference lies in what they emphasize: soir refers to a specific point in time, while soirée focuses on the duration of that time and the activities that fill it.

Soir

A1
The word soir refers to the evening as a point in time or a simple time marker. It is objective and factual, indicating the part of the day between late afternoon and bedtime. Use soir when you are specifying when something happens.
Je t'appelle demain soir.
(I will call you tomorrow evening.)
Le musée ferme à 21 heures le soir.
(The museum closes at 9 PM in the evening.)
Que fais-tu ce soir ?
(What are you doing this evening?)
(In general, I read a little in the evening before sleeping.)
(The television news is at eight o'clock in the evening.)

Soirée

A2
The word soirée emphasizes the duration of the evening and what happens during that time. It often implies a social event, an activity, or a subjective experience. It is also commonly used to mean "party" or "event".
(I had a very good evening with my friends.)
Passe une excellente soirée !
(Have an excellent evening!)
(We went to a costume party for Halloween.)
(The evening began with a dinner and ended with music.)
(I have planned a quiet evening at home.)

Summary

In short, use soir when you are talking about the evening as a time marker (when?). Use soirée when you are describing the content, duration, or experience of the evening, or an event itself (what happened?). A simple rule of thumb for greetings is to say Bonsoir when you arrive somewhere in the evening, and Bonne soirée ! when you leave, wishing the other person a pleasant time for the rest of the evening.
