Piste cyclable vs. bande cyclable

While both piste cyclable and bande cyclable refer to infrastructure designed for bicycles, they describe completely different layouts in French urban planning. The primary difference lies in whether the bicycle route is physically separated from car traffic or merely painted on the shared roadway.

Piste cyclable

A piste cyclable is a bicycle path or track that is physically separated from the main road used by motorized vehicles. This physical separation can be achieved using a curb, a concrete barrier, a row of parked cars, or a strip of grass, offering cyclists a distinct, dedicated, and safer physical space.

(The city built a new bike path along the river.)

(This bike path crosses the large city park from one end to the other.)

(Scooters and motorcycles are strictly forbidden from riding on the bike path.)
(The mayor inaugurated a two-way bike path to make commuting easier for workers.)

Bande cyclable

A bande cyclable is a bicycle lane that is simply painted directly onto the road, sharing the same asphalt as cars. It is usually marked by a solid or dashed white line on the pavement and offers no physical barrier between the cyclists and motorized traffic.
(A badly parked delivery car is completely blocking the bike lane.)
(The town hall painted a green bicycle lane on the right side of the road to alert drivers.)

(The white line of the bike lane is gradually fading because of heavy rains.)
(Before turning right, the driver must check that no one is coming on the bike lane.)

(This old street is way too narrow to create a real bike lane there.)
(Cyclists must stay in the bike lane so as not to obstruct the cars.)

Summary

In short, choose piste cyclable when talking about a physically separated and dedicated track for bikes, which is generally safer. Use bande cyclable when referring to a painted lane on the regular road that shares the exact same space with cars. The defining distinction is always physical separation versus painted lines.
