Négliger vs. délaisser

While both négliger and délaisser usually translate to "to neglect" in English, they express different nuances. Generally, négliger refers to a lack of care, attention, or maintenance, whereas délaisser implies abandoning, dropping, or leaving something behind, often in favor of something else.

Négliger

This verb describes the act of treating someone or something with carelessness or indifference. It implies that you are not giving enough attention to a task, a person, or your own appearance. It focuses on the poor quality of care or the act of unintentional oversight.

Délaisser

C1
This verb has a stronger sense of abandonment or withdrawal. It means to stop caring for, using, or visiting someone or something that you used to be involved with. It often suggests leaving something behind to focus on a new interest.

Summary
