Forteresse vs. fortification
While both forteresse and fortification relate to military defense and can be translated as fortress or fortification, they are not interchangeable in French. Forteresse refers to a specific, self-contained stronghold, whereas fortification is a broader term for defensive structures or the act of creating them.
Forteresse
B1A forteresse is a large, standalone, and heavily armed building or complex of buildings designed for long-term defense, such as a castle or a citadel. It refers to a specific, complete entity that functions as a stronghold.

Fortification
B2The word fortification has two main senses. Firstly, it can refer to any military structure built for defense, such as a wall, a rampart, a bunker, or a trench. It is often used in the plural (fortifications) to describe a whole system of defenses. Secondly, it can describe the process or act of strengthening a place.

Summary
In short, a forteresse is a specific type of building, a large, self-sufficient fortress or citadel. Fortification is a more general term. It can be a single defensive element (like a wall or trench), a whole system of defenses (often plural: les fortifications), or the abstract action of building those defenses. Therefore, a forteresse is a type of fortification, but not all fortifications are a forteresse.
