Empêcher vs. prévenir vs. éviter

The French verbs empêcher, prévenir, and éviter all express the idea of preventing something from happening, but they are used in entirely different contexts. The choice between them depends on whether you are actively blocking an action, taking advance precautions, or dodging a negative outcome.

Empêcher

The verb empêcher means to prevent by putting up a physical or metaphorical obstacle. It implies a direct intervention that actively stops an action or event from taking place. When expressing the idea of stopping someone from doing something, empêcher is typically followed by the preposition de and an infinitive verb.

(The heavy rain is going to prevent us from going out today.)
Le gardien a fermé la grille pour empêcher la foule d'entrer.
(The guard closed the gate to prevent the crowd from entering.)

Prévenir

The verb prévenir means to prevent by anticipating a problem and taking precautions beforehand. It implies proactive measures, often related to health, safety, or systemic risks, to ensure a negative event never occurs in the first place. While prévenir can also mean to warn someone, in the context of keeping something from happening, it is strictly about advance protection.

Éviter

The verb éviter translates to avoiding or averting. It is used to express preventing a bad situation by dodging it, staying away from it, or changing one's actions so that the undesirable event does not happen to them.

(The driver braked very abruptly to prevent the collision.)

Summary

To choose the correct word, you must consider the method of prevention. Use empêcher when you are dealing with a direct block or obstacle stopping an action. Use prévenir when you are talking about proactive safety measures taken in advance to keep a risk from materializing. Use éviter when the goal is dodging, averting, or steering clear of a negative outcome.
