Écouter vs. entendre
In French, while both écouter and entendre relate to the sense of hearing, they are not interchangeable. The core difference lies in intention: écouter is an active, deliberate act of listening, whereas entendre is the passive, often unintentional, act of hearing.
Écouter
A1This verb means to listen to. It implies a conscious and voluntary action. When you écouter, you are actively paying attention to a sound, a conversation, or music with the intention of understanding or enjoying it.

(I like to listen to music while reading.)

(The teacher asks the students to listen to him carefully.)

(Listen to me when I give you advice!)

(We went to listen to a jazz concert last night.)
Il faut savoir écouter les autres pour bien communiquer.
(You have to know how to listen to others to communicate well.)
Entendre
A1This verb means to hear. It describes the physical ability to perceive sound with your ears, whether you are paying attention or not. It is a passive sense, something that happens to you rather than something you do. It can also sometimes mean to understand or to mean.
J'ai entendu un bruit étrange dehors.
(I heard a strange noise outside.)
Parle plus fort, s'il te plaît, je ne t'entends pas bien.
(Speak louder, please, I can't hear you well.)

(Even if I'm not listening to it, I can hear the television in the next room.)

(What do you mean by soon?)

(From my window, I can hear the children playing in the park.)
Summary
In short, the difference between écouter and entendre is the same as the difference between to listen and to hear in English. You use écouter when you are actively and intentionally paying attention to a sound. You use entendre when your ears simply perceive a sound, regardless of your attention. You can entendre something without écouter it, but you must be able to entendre in order to écouter.
