Conscient vs. au courant

Both conscient and au courant translate to aware or conscious in English, but they are used in entirely different contexts. The difference lies in the depth of knowledge: conscient refers to a deep internal understanding or realization of consequences, while au courant simply means being informed about a fact, piece of news, or event.

Conscient

The word conscient means being deeply aware of a situation, realizing its gravity, understanding its consequences, or being medically conscious. It implies a mental, moral, or psychological realization rather than just possessing factual information.
(I am aware of the risks I am taking.)
(He is finally aware of his past mistakes.)
(The patient is still conscious after the shock.)
(We must all be aware of our impact on the planet.)
(She acts without being aware of the danger surrounding her.)

Au courant

The expression au courant means being informed, up-to-date, or possessing factual knowledge about a specific event or news. It is used when someone has been told about something or is simply keeping track of everyday occurrences.
(I am not aware of this change of schedule.)
(Please keep me updated on your arrival time.)
(He was already aware of the surprise before the party.)
(She is always up to date with the latest office news.)
(Are you aware of what happened last night?)

Summary

To choose the correct word, ask yourself about the nature of the awareness. Use conscient when you want to express a deep, moral, or consequential realization, or when referring to someone who is awake and medically conscious. Use au courant when you simply want to state that someone has been informed about a fact, a piece of news, or a specific event.
