Mesoclisis

<p><strong>Mesoclisis</strong> is a unique feature of the Portuguese language where an unstressed object pronoun is placed <strong>in the middle of the verb</strong> (between the stem and the ending).</p>

<p>While pronouns usually appear before the verb (proclisis) or after it (enclisis), mesoclisis inserts the pronoun inside the verb form immediately after the infinitive stem.</p>

Because of this compound origin, the pronoun could be placed between the two parts. As the language evolved and these parts merged into single words, the "middle" position for the pronoun remained.</p>

<p>Mesoclisis is predominantly found in formal writing, literature, and ceremonial speech. In widely spoken Portuguese, simpler alternatives are used:</p>
