Portuguese conjugation explanation
Mesoclisis
<p><strong>Mesoclisis</strong> is a unique feature of the Portuguese language where an unstressed object pronoun is placed <strong>in the middle of the verb</strong> (between the stem and the ending).</p>
<p>While pronouns usually appear before the verb (proclisis) or after it (enclisis), mesoclisis inserts the pronoun inside the verb form immediately after the infinitive stem.</p>
<div class="conjugation_explanation_title">When to use Mesoclisis</div>
<p>Mesoclisis is strictly limited to two grammatical tenses:</p>
<ul>
<li>The
<a class="conjugation_explanation_link_intext" href="/study/tenseGuideForTense/5/" target="_blank">Future Indicative</a>
(<span style="font-style: italic;">Futuro do Presente</span>)</li><li>The
<a class="conjugation_explanation_link_intext" href="/study/tenseGuideForTense/6/" target="_blank">Conditional</a>
(<span style="font-style: italic;">Futuro do Pretérito</span>)</li></ul>
<p>Historically, these tenses were formed by combining the infinitive with the present or imperfect forms of the auxiliary verb <span style="font-style: italic;">haver</span>. Because of this compound origin, the pronoun could be placed between the two parts. As the language evolved and these parts merged into single words, the "middle" position for the pronoun remained.</p>
<div class="conjugation_explanation_title">Structure and Examples</div>
<p>To form a verb with mesoclisis, follows this pattern: <strong>Infinitive + Pronoun + Ending</strong>.</p>
<div class="conjugation_explanation_example_sentence">Eu <span class="green_emphasis">ajudar-te-ei</span> amanhã. (<span style="font-style: italic;">I will help you tomorrow.</span>)</div>
<div class="conjugation_explanation_example_sentence_note">Breakdown: <strong>ajudar</strong> (infinitive) + <strong>te</strong> (pronoun) + <strong>ei</strong> (future ending).</div>
<div class="conjugation_explanation_example_sentence">Eles <span class="green_emphasis">tratá-lo-iam</span> com respeito. (<span style="font-style: italic;">They would treat him with respect.</span>)</div>
<div class="conjugation_explanation_example_sentence_note">Note: The <span style="font-style: italic;">r</span> is removed from the infinitive stems ending in <span style="font-style: italic;">r</span>, <span style="font-style: italic;">s</span>, or <span style="font-style: italic;">z</span> when combined with pronouns starting with <span style="font-style: italic;">l</span> (like <span style="font-style: italic;">o</span> becoming <span style="font-style: italic;">lo</span>).</div>
<div class="conjugation_explanation_title">Modern Usage and Restrictions</div>
<p>Mesoclisis is predominantly found in formal writing, literature, and ceremonial speech. In widely spoken Portuguese, simpler alternatives are used:</p>
<ul>
<li><strong>Ir + Infinitive:</strong> <span style="font-style: italic;">"Vou te ajudar"</span> or <span style="font-style: italic;">"Vou ajudar-te"</span>.</li>
<li><strong>Proclisis (Brazil):</strong> Putting the pronoun before the verb (<span style="font-style: italic;">"Eu te ajudarei"</span>).</li>
</ul>
<p>Crucially, if a sentence contains a word that triggers
<a class="conjugation_explanation_link_intext" href="/conjugationExplanation/compulsory_proclisis/" target="_blank">compulsory proclisis</a>
(such as <strong>não</strong>), mesoclisis cannot be used. The attraction of the negative particle pulls the pronoun to the front:</p><div class="conjugation_explanation_example_sentence"><span class="red_emphasis">Wrong:</span> Não <span style="text-decoration: line-through;">sentir-me-ei</span> bem.</div>
<div class="conjugation_explanation_example_sentence"><span class="green_emphasis">Correct:</span> Não <strong>me sentirei</strong> bem. (<span style="font-style: italic;">I will not feel well.</span>)</div>
